Remember to close down Betting Assistant

Postby Smokin Joe » Tue Aug 05, 2008 8:30 pm

I went away for the weekend and left BA running on the Big Brother 9 outright market, I came back last night to an email from my ISP telling me that I was half way through my monthly download limit of 50GB during 8am to midnight (and it was only the 4th of the month).

I'll not do that again

I didn't have much else running, does 25GB of downloads sound right for BA being on constantly for 4 days, as it seemed high, but perhaps it is correct.

Anyway, I've learned my lesson.........

Can you tell me the refresh rate and I'll do some calculations. Also if you were using ladder or standard interface.

I use the standard interface and refresh of 1 second. I was also logging to Excel.

A bit more detail:
I got the dates wrong, the period started 22nd July, but I have used 120GB since then as I had a carry over from previous under usage!!!!

My last session was connected for 10 days and 13 hours and I used more than 81GB (I don't do any downloading).

How do those numbers sound?

Hi,

First may I say just how great this software is becoming.

I was going to place a query exactly along these lines because I am a Virgin Media
customer and was getting my usage capped after about ONLY
one hour of use from 3pm when there usage meters kick in, I was allowed
only 350mb with my 4mb connection before restrictions. This had the
effect of making things pretty slow I can tell you.

Anyway what I did was to call them up and enquire why? The technician
talked to me and to cut a longer story short I ended up installing DUmeter.
I was amazed to see that I was using about 500mb (FIVE HUNDRED MB)
per hour! I was trading on the greyhounds with a refresh of 0.6seconds
AND had TWO Bet Assistants open at the same time, BOTH throttled to 12
requests per second. This is so I could see all six dogs on the ladder
interface at the same time. Only tab open at a time on each.

I now have the same scenario but have limited the refresh rate to ONE second.
This still uses about 250mb per hour but because I now have a
10mb speed all seems well and am almost never capped any more.
Even so the typical speed measured by DUmeter is around 90k per
second when things get busy.

Is this all normal?

May I also throw in the following queries please:

Could we have a "cancel" all bets for individual ladders?
Make "conditional bets" stay "live" when changing markets?
Add an audible sound shortly (about 30secs) before a market suspends?
Default to ladder interface - that's used by me 99% of the time?

Thanks if you consider any of these suggestions.

Finally is there anywhere in the forum where I could find MORE and
FULLY explained conditional bets information. Or could someone provide
a few more examples please?

All the best - Michael :)

Betting assistant does use a lot of bandwidth. With a refresh rate of .3 on one ladder with full market depth I'd use about 200 meg an hour. If your using 3 ladders I imagine it would be extremely high.

I second these:
Add an audible sound shortly (about 30secs) before a market suspends?
Default to ladder interface - that's used by me 99% of the time?

This default to ladder interface, I notice that the option is within Betting options. So this could be solved by making the Betting options, including whether to display them or not, part of Preferences, so that it could be saved - I have already suggested this.

Incidentally, I have not the faintest idea of how to use the ladder interface, or why it is used - is it for trading? I presume that is what all the "ticks" stuff is about. Is there any tutorial material anywhere about this side of BA?

Gary, did you get a chance to do those calculations?

On the big brother winner market on the standard interface the data transferred is about 6000 bytes per second = 351.56kb per minute = 20.59mb per hour = 494.38mb per 24 hours = 4.82 gig per 10 days.

81 gig sounds way out based on these figures.

You can see for yourself how much is being transferred in the task manager (press ctrl-alt-del then select the networking tab). What does the bytes per interval show? Obviously make sure you are not running any other internat apps at the same time.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
