Strange increase of requests

Postby milfor » Sat Aug 23, 2008 7:31 pm

I don't throttle the requests because a short delay could become quite expensive on some occasions. Until today I never had a problem with this. The number in brackets after 'Req:' was only a few hundreds and I didn't have to pay any charges.

Today exactly the same system was running as yesterday but the number in brackets after 'Req:' is 85318
Am I right that this will cost 85 Pounds (minus a few for commission)?
Can anyone imagine a reason for such a huge increase without system change?

The program hasn't been changed to make more requests on each refresh.

Yes, that's £85.

Can you advise the following.

1) Refresh rate
2) How many markets at a time
3) Standard or ladder interface
4) Were you using Excel triggers? If so do you use the tick offset triggers?

When the throttling is turned off the timings of the requests is not managed. It is possible that many of the 42 markets were being refreshed within the same second. No attempt is made to spread the requests out. It was a matter of luck that you didn't get hit with charges before. When throttling is turned on not only are the requests limited to 20 in one second, but they are also spread evenly over the second.

I'm sorry about this, but I thought everyone would use throttling when refreshing this many markets. I can update the next release to spread the requests when throttling is switched off.

Yes that would be helpful.

Motivated by the horror of yesterday I kept an eye on the requests all day long. The behaviour of the request rate backs your explanation.

By the way: What does the other number in brackets mean (behind the actual refresh)?

The value in brackets after the refresh is the response time for the refresh request in milliseconds.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
