Using Override Odds When Backing In-Running

Postby bigfox » Sat Aug 11, 2007 6:18 pm

Im backing horses in running using the override odds button. I have it set to 1.01. When I click the price the price I get is always far lower than what I see. Eg In ayr there I hit the button when the 3rd column was at 2.8. My bet only matched at 1.18. Is override odds the quickest way to get matched would I be quicker deselecting this & just hitting the 3rd back column? Any advice would be much appreciated.

As you are betting inrunning, i suspect the price movements are due mostly to the 2 sec delay that Betfair put on all inplay bets. Wouldn't think that altering any setting would alter the speed of the bet going through if you are using a high refresh rate. If i recall correctly, when BA receives updated infrmation from Betfair, it also sends any bets - so the faster the update the faster your bet will be sent.

Others may have time the diferent methods of betting, but i think this is the main part you should be looking at.
There may be other factors involved in the speed of the connection however. Try a search on the forum on how to test the ping speed or latency and also see how many steps your connection is going through to make contact with Betfair.

thousands of bets a second are sent to betfair....your refresh rate masks a lot of the actual changes in prices, overiding at 1.01 will always give you the best odds possible..

betfairs processing delay is 1 sec not 2.

The delay depends on the market

BA sends bets to Betfair as soon as you click - it doesn't wait for the next refresh (except from Excel)

If you consistently find that the money is disappearing before your bet gets there it could be two things: other people have a faster race feed than you (or just click quicker), and so beat you to the money; or some of the money is being cancelled at the same time as your bet goes in (there is no delay on cancelling bets) - e.g. the person who was laying at 2.8 saw the same thing as you and realised it would be crazy to get matched at that price and removed it.

That gives you a kind of way to beat the 1 sec delay (I've used this in cycling, but not for horses) - put in a high back and a low lay that each represent value in the current state of play - you may be lucky and get matched just due to the price jumping around. If your runner surges, so your lay is no longer value, cancel it, and you cancel will always get through before the sudden surge of backers can hit it.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
