VB.NET if I remember from earlier posts

Good choice for this - makes the API and Excel integration easy

(C#.NET would be an equally good choice - this is what I'm building my API app in - I was amazed how easy it was to get the base-level API-interaction working - wsdl.exe generates all the classes for you, and it didn't take much code at all to start getting data back - trying to do this in the last langauages I used commercially (C++ & java) would have been much more of a nightmare. I'm using VSTO for my own Excel integration - saves having to do any nasty COM stuff, and also for Excel-side code - avoids hateful hateful VBA!)

The program is written in VB.Net and it compiles nicely in Visual Basic Express 2005 which is absolutely free at the moment so I would recommend you visit www.microsoft.com and get a copy.

Seconded

http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/ - you can get a free version of visual studio covering a single language. It doesn't really matter which language you choose as they compile to the same thing - choose according to what you've done before. I prefer C#.NET as it is more like C++, but if you have VB / VBA experience then VB.NET will be easier.

If you are using C# then let me know as I have some notes and code I could share that would help get you started.

This is worth doing if you have something very specific that you want to do that isn't currently provided by any other software, or would be impossible to do in Excel combined with Gary's program. If you want to emulate Gary's program, then you have a LOT of work ahead of you.

(VSTO which gives you the office integration does cost (around £500, or cheaper for an academic license) but gets you a full version of Visual Studio - I need it for other work I am doing, and wouldn't have bought it specifically for this)

Cheers for all of that.

I have no intention of doing my own as I have no idea what to do, and Gary's can't be improved on imo. Just needed to know for reference.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
