VLOOKUP et al

Postby boycee » Sun Feb 19, 2006 9:41 pm

I am wrestling with the VLOOKUP function in Excel. I want to use it for automating my selections on the dogs. the problem is that on Betfair trap numbers are used instead of discreet names. To cut along story short here is an example of my problem:-

Race 1 Trap 1
Race 2 Trap 2
Race 2 Trap 3
Race 2 Trap 6
Race 3 Trap 4
Race 4 Trap 1
Race 4 Trap 2
Race 6 Trap 1

etc etc

When I use the VLOOKUP function I can get it to return single values for each race. How do I get it to return all of the positive values for each race.

eg if I use VLOOKUP for RACE 2 I only get Trap 2 instead of Traps 2 , 3 and 6

This is the first time I have used this function and it is doing my head in!

I posted some VLOOKUP code under

http://gruss-software.co.uk/forum/viewt ... c&start=15

that may be of use to you - It basically picks a horse from a list.

As you'd have lots of runners with the same name you'll need to add a separate field with the race time to filter .

I'd do it the same way as on the other thread just use the race time to populate part of the VLOOKUP

i.e. column A race time (format this coumn as text) Column B Trap 1 etc Column C use to populate this with the TRAP #'s when the race time is hit Column D odds column E stake Column F BACK/LAY

So VLOOKUP would use column C but that would only be populated with the traps when the race time had been hit
Just stick the race time in a named cell say 'time' then for column C just use a simple statement like
=IF(A1=time,B1,"") Then if it the correct time that column would fill with your runners to pick using VLOOKUP. Alot harder to try and explain than actually do it

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
