Scotland v England

Scotland v England

Date: Tuesday 18th November 2014

Time: 20:00

Competition: Friendly

Venue: Celtic Park, Glasgow

The England game sees the conclusion of a big few days for Scotland. For the hosts, they entertained the Irish on Friday night in a Euro 2016 Qualifier, winning the game 1-0 and continuing their impressive Euro 2016 qualifying campaign. Although this game is just a friendly on paper, the Scots certainly won’t see it that way and will be looking to redeem themselves after narrowly losing to the English 3-2 back in August.

After the win against Slovenia, England now face the challenge of beating a resilient Scotland who have only lost 3 times in their last 13 games. This post-referendum clash will be no easy game for the English.

Famous Games

The first ever match between Scotland and England took place in 1872 and ended in a 0-0 draw. Since then, the game between these two countries has become one of the biggest rivalries in British football. In total they’ve played 111 games, with England winning 46 and Scotland winning 41 matches - 24 games also resulted in draws.

Scotland’s first ever win against England took place in 1878 after beating them 7-2. England later went on to top this with an impressive 9 – 3 victory in front of 97,350 spectators at the Old Wembley. Jimmy Greaves also scored a hat trick!

Other famous matches include the England v Scotland game at Euro 1996. Following their first goal in the second half, England looked set to win, but after Scotland were awarded a penalty kick in the 76th minute, they soon realised that victory was only within their grasp. Luckily, Gary McAllister’s penalty was saved by David Seaman. Soon after, Paul Gascoigne scored England’s second goal after chipping the ball over Scottish defender Colin Hendry and finishing emphatically past the keeper. This goal gave birth to Gazza’s famous dentist chair celebration.

In August 2013, a debut goal from Rickie Lambert saw England edge out Scotland in the first game between the two since 1999. After a fantastic start to the game that celebrated the England FA’s 150th anniversary, spirited Scotland went ahead twice before the hosts pegged them back. However it was Lambert, who had played in the lower leagues most of his career that had the final say to give England a 3-2 win.

Team News

Largely made up of English Championship players, Johnny Russell replaces Derby team mate Craig Bryson in Gordon Strachan’s 27 man squad. After receiving a knock in his previous outing in the win against Tottenham, Stoke full-back Phil Bardsley has been replaced by Callum Paterson who wins his first ever call up to the Scottish senior side. Celtic’s Charlie Mulgrew who produced a Man of the Match performance against Ireland, is back in the squad after injury and suspension.

Fresh new players such as Andy Robertson of Hull City and Watford’s Ikechi Anya are both performing well only recently after being called up to the side. Its exciting times ahead for Rangers 20 year old midfielder Lewis McLeod, who has been called up after scoring 8 goals already for the Scottish Championship side this season. However there is no place for Sporting Lisbon’s 18 year old midfielder Ryan Gauld who was called up for the doubleheader against Poland and Georgia to gain experience. Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping to play a part after being called up for the senior Scotland team for the Euro 2016 Group D qualifying games against Georgia and Poland but was an unused substitute.

In the game against Slovenia, Raheem Sterling played his first England match since asking to sit out of England’s game verses Estonia. Roy Hodgson hasn’t been able to call upon Daniel Sturridge, who is still out after injuring his thigh muscle whilst with the team before the Switzerland game. The Liverpool man’s replacement Saido Berahino, who is expected to start the game, will be hoping to impress after being called up for the national team for the first time after his goal scoring performances for West Bromwich Albion.

West Ham’s Stewart Downing resumes his England career after being called up for the first time since 2012.Nathaniel Clyne will be hoping to start the game as he did against Slovenia, making the squad after impressing in Southampton’s brilliant early season form. The return of Theo Walcott from injury comes as a massive boost to both England and Arsenal fans alike.

Goalkeeper Fraser Forster is expected to start in goal after Joe Hart returned to Manchester City. It remains to be seen who will start the game in Glasgow as it is a friendly, however it is likely that England captain Wayne Rooney will start after earning his 100th cap verses Slovenia, joining Ashley Cole, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard in the 100 cap club.

England who have won their last 5 games are favourites for the win 4/5.
