Update on Betfair Site Outage on 20-July-2011

Postby MarkRussell » Wed Jul 20, 2011 9:43 pm

Betfair have made the following statements:-

Although we are underway with an internal review we would like to update you with regards to what happened this morning to cause a service outage.

From 08.25 BST this morning we experienced an internal network routing failure. This resulted in our customers being unable to access any of the services we offer through our website and API. Using our automated monitoring tools, we were able to pinpoint the area where the issue was occurring and ultimately re-routed traffic to allow customers’ access to the site. Service was restored at approximately 10.40 BST.

During the course of this outage we disabled betting and communicated to customers through our forum and other social media outlets as per our Customer Commitment.

We’ll continue to work to determine the ultimate root cause for the issue, and will update you as soon as this information is available. We’d like to apologise again for the disruption to our service and we’ll continue to focus our efforts on providing a reliable product experience and clear communication.

We have now completed our review and are confident that we have identified the source of the outage that occurred this morning. We intend to put our network traffic back onto our primary routes tomorrow morning (21st July 2011) between 05.00 BST and 07.00 BST. We don’t anticipate this change causing any disruption but we wanted to make you aware of developments. We’ll confirm when the work is completed tomorrow morning.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
