How Betfair Matches Bets

Postby chopper » Mon Jan 04, 2010 5:00 am

My question isn't directly related to BA but it follows on from my previous post so I hope its ok to post here.

If you consider a market with only two selections in it, say tennis for example. Say the prices for player A are 1.14 @ 1.15. Assume I put an offer to lay player B at a price of 8 into the market. This is the equivalent of me wanting to back player A at 1.143.

Does this mean that if someone clicks on 1.15 to lay they will get matched with my price of 8 as they're effectively getting a better price?

Thanks.

Not 100% sure in that specific case, as not sure how they round it and that's a 1-tick spread. Betfair are being pretty cheeky as they take the difference for themselves.

If you had an example with a wider spread and yours came in the middle, yes yours would be taken.

They do get matched with your 8, but I think they only get 1.14. Betfair pocket the difference.
The backer can only get a valid increment, by this I mean that he can only get 1.14 or 1.15 or 1.16 etc - he can't get 1.143.

However, had the lay price been 7.6 then the backer would have got 1.15.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Yeah I agree, I think that's a little cheeky by Betfair.

However, I like the fact that it's a way of getting inside the tick spread and getting your back or lay to the front of the queue.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
