Also I forgot to mention if you are a non UK user you are routed through a server in Malta and generally you are not going to achieve the same refresh rate as a UK user. This beyond our control.

Thanks for the replay
I only use the grid interface .
CPU Core 2 duo, 2.93 MHz, 2gb memory , nothing else running, wireless connection with excellent signal , in theory 12 Mbps.
The figure in brackets say something like 120 (almost always the same) and the actual refresh rate 210-220 ms.
When you say 'the closer this response time is to 100ms' you mean 'closer and lower' than 100?
Diagnosis doctor?

Sometimes (lets lay once in every 10-20 0.2sec refreshes) the instant refresh becomes something like 1 sec or more. Something like 'freezing'

Just show it. This explains a lot, I'm from Greece.

The figure in brackets needs to be below 100. On my connection it's typically 35-60ms. 120ms means it's getting a slower response time than your requested refresh rate which means it's impossible to achieve. When it 'freezes' it's because that particular request had a much slower response from Betfair.

A final tech question for you Gary, I'll test my refresh later, is there any reason whatsoever on the technical side that a netbook should work slower than a standard laptop if they are sat next to each other using the same wifi?

Is the processor a problem or something like that? I presumed that as long as I had a decent amount of room (114GB) and a new netbook, it would work the same as a standard laptop. I thought it was all about the broadband speed/flow I got rather than anything specific on my netbook setup (I would accept that an 3,4,5 year old laptop might be slower).

Many thanks for your time.

It definitely requires more CPU power. To update a prices grid 10 times per second is quite CPU intensive. It's not the data transfer and parsing, that hardly requires any CPU. It's the graphics rendering that requires the processing power. I have a dell netbook and it manages it. It will work fine on all modern laptops and desktops, but a netbook's CPU is not as powerful.

Can I buy anything, laptop or netbook, but the latter specifically, to decrease my CPU and make BA work more efficiently?

Once again, thank you

Have you tried it yet with the throttle set to 20? I didn't mean to imply that BA is inefficient because it is very efficient in my opinion. I was just explaining why the CPU usage looks relatively high on a netbook, it should still be able to refresh 10 times per second.

Hi Gary

I have tested it at home this afternoon and it seems to be fine and working how I would expect (I won twice in two races so far so that helped :D )

I'd never do without BA and it has made me into a winning punter, and a big winner at that, I was wondering if there was anyway of getting the CPU down, and not that BA was not doing it's job efficiently. I meant I thought that the CPU was affecting BA's refresh rate, which I must have been wrong about.

Can I make my netbook more powerful in general by upgrading anything?

Some of the new culv laptops are netbook like in size & battery life with much better perfomance, Acer timeline 1810 is a good example and only £450. That's nothing at all for a winning punter.....

Why did you buy a netbook in the first place if you are using it on a home wireless network ?

You might be able to add more RAM, depending on the model, but you can't upgrade the processor in a netbook.

I don't always use it at home, I bought it to be nice and portable for taking around with me.

I understand netbooks with better processors are on the cards this year, but I couldn't wait for that ! Cheers for the responses. Things seemed good today so I will wait before upgrading to another netbook/laptop :D

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
