Horse Racing: What difference a day makes

Postby milfor » Wed Oct 07, 2009 12:03 am

I watched all horse races on Monday and Tuesday. On Monday many races were exciting, at different stages different horses seemed to win. But on Tuesday whenever a horse started dominating it carried away the victory.

Can anyone of the horse racing experts here give an 'obvious' reason for that difference (weather, race type etc.) or was it just a coincidence that all the 'exciting' races happen on one day and all the 'boring' ones on the other?

Nothing more than chance.

Think of this as a longterm game.

With, say, 6000 races a year, your sample of around 40 could have come from almost anywhere on the normal distribution curve.

Yep, purely random coincidence I'm afraid. Down to the performances of the horses and riders on the day.

And there's the rub. Everyone on this board would gladly sell their families and pets into lifetimes of servitude in exchange for any mystical knowledge which would enable us to predict how a race is likely to play out. That's why we spend all our time (I'm speaking for myself) scrabbling vainly around looking for any hint of patterns involving formbooks (horses & riders), courses (the obvious two), distances, numbers of runners, weather, going and so on.

So obviously if you do manage to find some correlating factor then please let us know (weather, phase of the moon, horses names played backwards at 78rpm, etc.). Or rather, send us private messages - since the last thing any of us wants is everyone else to have the same edge ...

Thanks for your comments. Hoped there would be an 'obvious' influence factor I have overlooked. But of course it isn't that easy.

The secret is out. The biggest edge for years -

A 3 mile wide hither to unknown by the masses ring of dust approx 8 miles out and circling with menace around Jupiter.

I believe this may be responsible for many things :D

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
