tick offset and stop loss on horses inrunning

Postby dikenia » Wed May 26, 2010 6:53 am

Hi folks, to the experienced ones, who predominantly bet/trade inrunning (horses that is): what is your opinion/experience using the tick offset and/or stop loss inrunning? I`m asking because especially on the flat there are so many tight finishes and bad angles that it is sometimes hard to identify the winner one or two furlongs out, even though you might have spotted a horse travelling well, and if you get involved too late the on-track boys have already smashed the price down to 1.01 and if it doesn`t win the same boys hoover the price to 1000 incl. your potential profit :(....so, would you recommend the use of tick offset/stop loss inrunning to at least lock in some profit resp. decrease the loss?

I haven't made a good deal of use of it mainly due to seeing too many stop losses triggered by in-running punters hoovering up all the money when a horse looks to be winning.
One thing that I think happens is that when a horse hits around 1.2 or so, you will often see the price jump out to around 4.0 and then immediately come back to 1.2ish. The upshot of this is that your stop loss gets triggered and the horse goes on to win and you end up out of pocket. To me, this is the main reason that backing horses at very low odds inrunning is not profitable.
You see this most in the final stages of a race but you can get triggered much earlier on as well at much longer odds in the same way.

I'd agree with kiint the liquidity can get thin in running and spikes all over the place a stop loss would more than likely end up costing you money rather than saving it. The tick offset would be a better option but again it's all down to how good you are at race reading and getting that initial 'value' bet , if you're any good it's likely the offset will only end up reducing your profit long term anyway.

I know a few players use the custom columns with preset prices so you may be better off using them and offsetting the bet manually at a preset price once matched

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
