Backing after Laying

Postby excelhasey » Fri May 28, 2010 10:30 pm

Hi all,

I am fairly new at this, so bare with me, I was looking at a horse race tonight and used the Excel Log Current Prices feature into a tweaked Excel spreadsheet from the forum which I called "Lay" asking it to Lay if the Lay odds were greater than zero, using my suggested stake, and I logged it just before the off manually so basically they were the nearly off prices. I then opened a New Page within BA and selected the same market but this time logging the data into my "Back" spreadsheet. The Back bet was to be triggered if both the Lay bet had been taken on a particular selection and the Back Odds available are greater than the Lay Odds taken. I found on the Lay spreadsheet the word LAY stays in the "Q" column, the bet gets taken, a bet ref appears in column "T", but the odds column still alters how do you get this to "Fix" once the bet is taken ??
Also, I was expecting the same thing to happen in the "BACK" spreadsheet but it doesn't, a bet ref appears if a bet is placed / taken but the word Back flashes on and off in the "Q" column even if the bet has been taken - why ??
More worryingly I said the stake must be the same as in the Lay spreadsheet but I had two odd occurances in the one race :- I laid one selection for 20p @ 24 yet it then placed a bet at £2 @ 1,000 and another selection was laid at 25p @ 6.4 and automatically backed at both 25p @ 6.2 and and 96p @ 6.8, how come it placed two bets on one selection ??, thats not what I asked for, the other 7 selections worked perfectly fine !!!! - I was out of pocket - I have checked and my formulas are the same as the other selections in both spreadsheets, so why did it do this ??
Can anyone help me, I really like the BA programme but i've gotta get it working for me ASAP, hence the low training stakes
Thanks
Fingers crossed

I don't understand everything you say. But the £2 @ 1000 are a necessary
workaround to place bets below £2, regardless whether you place the bets
manually or with any program.

Ahhhh off course you initially have to place £2 @ 1,000 before you can get ya smaller bet on, thanks something for me to consider, appreciate your reply

I presume you want a record of the matched odds. It's in column V.

Also, I was expecting the same thing to happen in the "BACK" spreadsheet but it doesn't, a bet ref appears if a bet is placed / taken but the word Back flashes on and off in the "Q" column even if the bet has been taken - why ??

This doesn't sound unusual. It just sounds like their is an "IF" formula which is either inserting "BACK" or an empty string. I think you are under the impression that columns Q to S become fixed after the bet is placed, this is not how it works.

yet it then placed a bet at £2 @ 1,000

As milfor said it initially places a £2 bet at 1000. You need a balance of £2 plus your actual required stake, eg. to back £1 you need a balance of at least £3. If your balance is too low it cannot complete the transaction and you end up with £2 at 1000. Another problem is that if the best back odds available are already 1000 then the £2 will get matched instantly.

another selection was laid at 25p @ 6.4 and automatically backed at both 25p @ 6.2 and and 96p @ 6.8, how come it placed two bets on one selection ??, thats not what I asked for,

This would mean there is a bug in Betting Assistant which places random bets, but there isn't, we would soon know about it. It must be your spreadsheet. Once column T contains a value another bet cannot be triggered so it must have somehow been cleared to allow another bet. Does the formula in column Q contain the "CLEAR" trigger as well as "BACK"?

Morning Gary,

Yeah there is an IF function for the BACK bet, I can live with it flashing on and off providing it only places one Back bet per selection, i.e. once the Bet Ref ID has been populated it won't place further bets. But there is no CLEAR trigger the only clear triggers I have set are the first 3 tick boxes on the Excel log prices data sheet, maybe I don't understand it, can you just quickly run through all 4 triggers for me ??

The first one says clear trigger clears matched odds, so is that why it placed 2 back bets, as it had cleared the 1st one ??

What does the clear auto / manual bet refs do ??

What does the update trigger appends 'N' to new bet ref do ??

Reading through your notes below and looking at my formula I found I had drawn reference to Selections!$R5 (odds) in the Lay spreadsheet, which I am thinking will alter even after a bet has been placed, so really I should have that set as Selections!$V5 as that is the average matched odds, as you suggested.

Still not sure why I had two Back bets on one selection but this is the result :-

GB / Strat 28th May / 20:50 3m3f Hcap Hrd Lyster Back 11075541085 6.8 0.96

GB / Strat 28th May / 20:50 3m3f Hcap Hrd Lyster Back 11075517729 6.4 0.25

GB / Strat 28th May / 20:50 3m3f Hcap Hrd Lyster Lay 11075513324 6.2 0.96

Thanks

The first one says clear trigger clears matched odds, so is that why it placed 2 back bets, as it had cleared the 1st one ??

It means if you use the CLEAR trigger it will also clear columns V and W as well as column T. No, it's not the reason why it placed two bets. I can't really say why your spreadsheet placed two bets without seeing it. I am certain though it's not due to a bug.

What does the clear auto / manual bet refs do ??

"Auto": It works with "Auto select markets" from the market menu. When the next market in the quick pick list is auto selected it will clear column T to enable bets to be placed.
"Manual": Column T is cleared if you manually select the next market.

What does the update trigger appends 'N' to new bet ref do ??

When you use the UPDATE trigger it will append "N" to the bet ref in column T. This will prevent the UPDATE trigger working again until you remove the "N". It's there to help prevent unwanted updates.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
