Running BA & an Excel Interface "unattended"

Postby grimesy » Fri Jun 11, 2010 5:12 pm

Two questions in one day - God I'm inquisitive today!

A question that regularly appeared on the Betfair UK Horse Racing Forum:-

Is it safe to leave BA running bots unattended? i.e. during a working day, then turning off the BA/Excel applications each evening.

This is something that I plan to start doing in a few weeks' time. I imagine the safest way to monitor the daily "soundness" of the bot running is via an iPhone?

BA itself is perfectly fine running 24/7 as it's stable and reliable - it's really your strategy that determines whether the day ends in profit or loss.

If your happy with your strategy then fine, if you're unsure and prefer to have a cut-off, using excel allows several ways to quit betting if losses reach a certain limit.

hi,
i definitely agree with Os, i just want to add that you'll have to double check that your code is working fine in all "strange" cases that might arise

And the keeping an eye on what is happening during the day via a mobile app is a good idea. If, as usually happens, things start to go wrong, then a quick transfer of your funds to your Australian wallet effectively shuts things down.

Thanks guys.

I'll be running 4 edges at any one time, and am happy that each will derive LT value, rather than just pure "winner in each race" profit; so I'm now comfortable with running the bot/BA whilst at my day job.

I'll be coding liability management structures into the bot in any event, so am happy that this will act as a further "fail safe".

Interesting approach using the Aussie wallet in that way - must get that set-up so! [already KYC'ed].

Thank you both for your replies :D

Can I just second/third that. I leave BA unattended for days on end and if your code is fine BA will deliver 100% !!

Me too- I have servers I haven't logged into for weeks.

Just be sure that your bots can deal with odd scenarios, look out for non runners that appear to be trading in play (but aren't really- all bets are cancelled afterwards) and things like that which can trip you up.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
