Query on latency with multiple processed bets.

Postby jc0r » Mon Oct 29, 2012 8:00 pm

Hey Guys

Is anyone able to answer a quick question for me, I notice that when I process more than one bet the latency increases slightly from that of when I send one bet. Is this due to the fact I am sending a slightly larger packet or is it the process time from the API.
Obviously I don't really care what the round trip times at, but like anyone I do want my bet to get to the API asap.
So the question is simple would sending 2 bets instead of 1 reach the API at a slower rate.

Thanks in advance

I'd be very surprised if the added data for 2 bets instead of one affects your speed to reach betfair, it's possible the perceived increase in latency is down to the API processing the extra and returning a response. Either way I'd imagine we're only talking milliseconds and that really isn't going to have any affect on your betting strategies.

Like Captain Sensible ill be very surprised if the data size changed anything. I don't know the specifics of BA architecture but regarding the API if the two bets are for the same market then you can send them in the same request and the response will be just one. The bottleneck can be the processing time of BetFair but i would doubt that too because i would expect the two bets will be resolved/matched in the same market cycle of 200ms.
If the bets are for two different markets then the request have to be separate and the time/delay will be increased.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
