Excel 2007 or earlier version?

Postby 1900b » Thu Oct 23, 2008 9:15 am

Hi Guys,

I'm new at the forum and have been looking around some time now and are amazed with the potential of the combination with excel. This made me eager to study some VBA, which also may come in handy at the office ;-)
VBA appears to be different between excel 2007 and earlier versions, so I need to make a choice which on to use. I suppose as you all have you libraries with old code from earlier versions u use excel xp/2003. What do you suggest?

Cheers,

Hi Matt,

Welcome :)

I use the same VBA code with Excel 2003 and 2007, so far without any problems.

I strongly suggest you go for 2007.

Cheers,

If this is a question about which product to buy, you should be aware that a) the initial release of Excel 2007 had several bugs, I believe, although these may have been fixed by now. And b) although VBA may be compatible with code written in previous versions, Excel 2007 was reported to be minimising the importance of VBA, so it may not be as easy to learn and use VBA in the later product. I would do some research before you spend the money.

If you are going to provide spreadsheets for other users, note that formulas written in Excel 2007 are not necessarily compatible with earlier products, and indeed nor is VBA code. Even Excel 2003 spreadsheets have this problem with macros. For this reason, I still use Excel 2000 so that my spreadsheets are compatible with later versions.

From other points of view, 2007 would be the way to go, because of the improvements in spreadsheet size limits, cell contents limits, etc.

Thanks guys for the info I think I'll have a look at 2007 for now. I already noticed that importing Betfair's historical data is only possible in 2007 because of the size of the data files. Through my work I have access to both versions, so I don't have to buy a version. The sharing of files is a point to keep in mind, however before I get to that point a newer version of excel is probably available. I work on a mac so Paralel Desktop is going in overtime mode...

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
