Tweeking refresh rate

Postby Mulkis » Wed Feb 02, 2011 2:54 pm

I am new to BA and find myself quite confused on how to efficiently customise API refresh rate in BA. My strategy does not require a very fast rates, I am more concernet about resourses program takes with multiply markets logging into number of excel sheets. Everything becomes too flickery on several sheets open.

So I tried to manage refresh rate and now its ok, but newertheless I am surprised hom many controls are there: Trottle settings in Performance prefernces, Refresh rate in Preferences, then again refresh rate in each market tab and - this is most confusing - Auto check box at each market tab. Then Stagger markets somewhere in Preferences...Comon... Its too much. What exactly control should I use in my case. Thank you.

I cannot possibly say what settings you should be using in your case. Everybody's requirements are unique, this is why there so many options. There are no unecessary options in my opinion.

I can only tell you what the different options are for.

Throttle settings
Betfair charge you for making requests in excess of 20 per second which is easily exceeded when viewing multiple markets. The throttle limit prevents BA from exceeding the set limit. The default limit is 10, but you can safely increase this 20 if required as long you are not running any other API software or the Betfair website at the same time. So you can appreciate that this setting is very much required otherwise many users would end up with hefty data charges.

Refresh rate in preferences
This is simply the initial refresh rate used when you open a new market.

Refresh rate in each market
You might want to adjust the refresh rate as you are viewing the market, but if you are happy with the default refresh rate you set in preferences you won't need to use this.

Auto check box
Untick this to stop the market refreshing. It's there for users who want it, but you don't need to use it.

Stagger request times across multiple markets.
If you are logging many markets and they are not being refreshed that often then it will stagger the requests so they are not all refreshed at the same time causing a spike in the amount of data downloaded from Betfair on each refresh. For example if you have 20 markets each refreshing every 60 seconds this will prevent 20 refresh requests all being made once every 60 seconds. Instead it will make a request every 3 seconds. I recommend leaving this option ticked.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
