How does betfair calculate the number of horses to pay out on in a place market. Normally in a bookies office, in a 5 horse race the first two get paid and in an 8 horse race its the first 3 that get paid how does betfair calculate the numbers
any help as always appreciated

Almost the same way bookies do
The diff is that it doesn't reduce the number of paid places in the case or NR AND change in the number of actual runners from:
5-7 to less than 5
8-15 to less than 7
>=16 to less than 16 (hcp races)

This number is calculated based on the declared number of runners in the race

Thanks alrodopial, as always you're a star.
Iodds had a look at the betfair sportsbook and they were saying
runners 5-7 odds 25 pay first two
runners 8+ odds .2 pay first three
runners 12-15 odds .25 handicap pay first three
runners 16+ handicap .odds 25 odds pay first four
Obviously with an exchange the odds as a percentage of SP or BSP don't matter in the place market but given that they dont reduce the number of places paid as the bookies do I wondered if there was a differance but couldn't find anything to confirm or deny anywhere. So thank you very much for your help with this.
best regards

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
