Cannot make connection to BetFair

Postby cooldad » Tue Jul 01, 2008 7:05 pm

When I start Betting Assistant, after I logon, I receive the following error message:

---------------------------
Betting Assistant
---------------------------
System.Net.WebException: Unable to connect to the remote server ---> System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it

at Betting_Assistant.Main.doLogon(Boolean loginAuto)
---------------------------

---------------------------

I have no firewall, I am not using a proxy. I can connect to the Internet using IE, so the Connection settings in IE are fine (this was causing a similar problem last week). There is nothing wrong with my user credentials; I can run Betting Assistant and logon from a different PC with no problem.

From the Ethernet trace, it looks like Betting Assistant is doing a DNS lookup for api.betfair.com, which returns IP address 84.20.192.244, and then no data is seen on the interface.

Please note that this problem really is different from last week´s connection problem. Not only the error message is different, but last time I couldn´t even get /BA_Updates/UpdateConfig.xml, which seems OK now.

Any idea what can be causing this?

This the Ethernet trace:

Are you sure you are not using a proxy? I have seen this error message before when trying to connect through a proxy.

Edit the file Betting Assistant.exe.config in the c:\program files\Betting Assistant Beta folder and change the proxy setting to read as follows.

<proxy bypassonlocal="false" usesystemdefault="false" />

Does this help?

If it's not a proxy and it's not a firewall then I'm afraid I'm at a loss to explain. I'll let you know if I have any other ideas.

I suppose we should try and rule out whether BA is being blocked by your PC.

If you open https://api.betfair.com/global/v3/BFGlobalService.wsdl in IE do you get a page of xml? If you do this would suggest BA is being blocked. You can then try renaming Betting Assistant.exe to Betting Assistant1.exe and run the copy, does the copy work?

From IE, I can open https://api.betfair.com/global/v3/BFGlobalService.wsdl, then I get an XML page:
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8" ?>
- <!--

Copyright 2003-2004 ...

-->
- <wsdl:definitions name="BFGlobalService" targetNamespace="http://www.betfair.com/publicapi/v3/BFGlobalService/"

etc.

I renamed BA to Betting Assistant1.exe, and I still got the same error. Any other suggestions?

Sorry, no suggestions yet, but I am certain your PC or maybe your router is blocking the program somehow.

I agree it must be my PC, as another laptop (using the same router and internet connection) is working fine. I must be something simple. I´ll now check my Windows services if something´s running that might be blocking it.

It´s working again. Although I had configured Symantec Firewall to allow BA, I disabled Symantec Firewall, stopped all Symantec services, it was apparantly still blocking BA. Only after I uninstalled Symantec Firewall, BA worked again. Sorry for any disturbance I´ve caused.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
