Multiple BAs and excels

Postby andak fedal » Tue Aug 16, 2011 7:03 pm

Can anyone tell me how many versions of betting Assistant you can have open on your machine at any one time, accessing the same market, without incurring data changes or affecting performance and response times etc.

Thanks in advance!

I've managed to dig out an old thread that suggests it's better to create several new pages within one Betting Assistant attached to different excel sheets, providing the settings are the same which in my case they are and then you avoid data charges.

I have now done this but can anyone tell me how I can tell which bets were fired by which sheet as bothe the transaction log and the mybets data seems to be global?

You could also select to log bet results when you link to Excel. It will only log results for bets triggered by that sheet.

Oh right great stuff, I thought this would work the same as log current bets but cool, I'll give this a try.

Thanks

Log bets has indeed allowed me to see what sheet is doing what so thanks Gary.

I have noticed that by having one BA and multiple sheets my refresh rate has plummeted! Is this likely to be my comp or BA or a combination of both?

Is there any way round this, I mean how can I tell if I'm going to be charged by betfair if I run several BAs?

It depends on how many tabs you have open. You are allowed to make 20 requests per second before being charged. You might have the default throttle limit of 10 set so you can increase this to 20 as long as you are only running one instance and are not using any other API software or the website at the same time. Select preferences from the options menu, select the throttling tab and increase the limit if you have not already done so.

Thanks Gary, I have done this but I also am using 5 instances of BA now.
It says that I can have up to 37 requests per second so I guess I need to spread this across the 5 BAs?

The refreshes were that slow with multiple excels in one BA that I was getting a lot less bets matched so I'm hoping that having the throttle limit set to 6 (37/5) will be better than using the one BA.

Do you think that setting the throttle limit to 6 would make a massive difference instead of being 20? Maybe I should just keep at 20, hope I don't get charged, plead ignorance if I do and hope I get to 100 requests allowed soon enough anyway.

In fact, is there anyway to keep submitting bets for the same selection in excel even while the previous bet is pending? If so I can probably just use one BA anyway.

There is no advantage in running 5 instances of BA throttled to 6 over one instance linked to 5 spreadsheets that I can think of.

It does not support placing further bets for the same selection while the previous is pending.

Ok, thanks for confirming. It must be a limitation of my computer then becuase I am seeing a significant decrease in refresh rates when excel sheets are linked to the same BA.

Have you tried it with completely blank excel sheets containing no formulae or code? It may be worth checking to see if you can optimize slow Excel calcs or operations.

Thanks Osknows, I have no removed all sheets apart from sheet 1 and my formulas aren't complicated, just a few nested ifs and simple calcs.

Would I just be better off trying to convert my excel sheet into code using the COM?

I tried this out with multiple blank sheets and the refresh rate is still slowing up with each extra sheet I add after 1.

When I have just the one the refrsh rate is constant 187/203ms but when I create 4 new pages and link them to blank excel sheets the refresh rate is 370ms at the lowest but fluctuates right up to nearly 1 second.

Am I doing something wrong here? Anyone who uses multiple sheets able to advise me here?

Thanks again

Ignore this please, I think it is just staggering requests across the workbooks based on the max allowed by betfair.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
