Accessing BA In France

Postby drphil » Sat Mar 06, 2010 7:37 pm

I need to access BA in France for a period of several months this summer but have just read on the BF forum that BF is now banned in France.

Someone suggested using a VPN. Is that the same as a proxy server??

Gary/anyone - can you advise on the best way around this and whether there would be speed loss?

I would be connecting using both landline and mobile broadband connections.

Thanks in advance

You will be using your Betfair account registered at a UK address I presume? Unless your ISP blocks the connection you should have no problems.

If they do block you then a VPN will be the answer. VPN is not the same as a proxy but you could install your own proxy software on a VPN such as http://www.youngzsoft.net/ccproxy/
I would personally recommend this over using a public proxy as I don't know of any public proxy providers that I could recommend.

See http://gruss-software.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4122 for a discussion on VPNs.

If you have to resort to using a VPN then this will increase the response times as it will take extra time for the request to go to the VPN and then onto Betfair. How much slower it is all depends on the response time of the VPN.

Thanks for that

Yes I will be using my UK registered account but my understanding is that the French ISP will block access to BF.

Sorry, but your response was a bit too technical for me.

In simple terms, are you saying using my own proxy software will effectively hide from the ISP, details of the website that I'm accessing? Will I therefore not need to sign up to a VPN?

Also, why are unable to recommend any public proxys ( ie is it for reasons of performance, security or just lack of first-hand experience with these companies)?

Yes, the proxy will hide the website. I am recommending that you sign up to a VPN and then install the proxy server on the VPN. The VPN is like a remote PC which you can install software on.

Lack of first-hand experience with these companies. I also suspect they would not perform as well as a VPN, but it's only a guess.

One more question.

Why do I need the proxy software if I am using a UK based VPN? Won't the final destination (ie Betfair) be hidden from the ISP anyway?

There are two ways you can use your VPN.

1) You can use Windows remote desktop software and use your VPN as a remote PC. In this case you don't need to bother with installing the proxy software.

2) You can install the proxy server on your VPN. You can then enter the IP address of your VPN into your proxy settings on your PC. Every time you use Betting Assistant it will automatically go through your VPN. This option means you don't have to logon to the VPN.

If option 2 sounds too technical then I would stick with option 1.

This could all be academic because Betfair's API address probably won't be blocked by your ISP.

Salut Phil,

I must read more as I thought BF were opening up in France this year.

I have never had any trouble using BA to access my Betfair UK account whilst in the South of France and speeds for me were always good.

If you are considering a VPN that you can use to access BA in France, I recommend to you HMA. It's fast and reliable according to a review I've been reading https://www.bestvpnservicemag.com/how-t ... french-ip/

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
