Cheltenham Gold Cup 2016: Preview & Odds
The most eagerly anticipated event in Britain’s horse racing calendar is almost upon us. We’re talking, of course, about the Cheltenham Gold Cup – the most challenging steeplechase in the country and a prestigious National Hunt event.
If you’re planning to enjoy a flutter on the horses at this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup, you’re not alone. And, to help you out, we’ve compiled everything you might want to know about the race – including its history, course information, and the details of this year’s Cheltenham Gold Cup runners and odds.
Cheltenham Gold Cup: A Brief History
The first Cheltenham Gold Cup reportedly took place in 1819 – although back then, it was a flat race rather than a steeplechase, and the winner took home just 100 guineas.
It wasn’t until 1924 that the Cheltenham Gold Cup moved to Cheltenham Racecourse and became the jumps race that we recognise today. In 1959, the Cheltenham Gold Cup moved from the ‘Old Course’ to the ‘New Course’, which is where it still takes place.
Since then, the race has taken place annually, and the size of the prize has risen exponentially. This year, the winning jockey will take home an impressive £6.85 million for riding his horse over the finishing line.
Interestingly, last year the Gold Cup was won by a novice – a horse called Coneygree – for the first time in over 40 years, beating 7/1 odds. This just goes to show how exciting and unpredictable the Cheltenham Gold Cup can be!
