Betfair Data Charges

Postby mikedmc » Fri Oct 03, 2008 11:20 am

Hi,

Had an email from Betfair yesterday explaining that I would have incurred charges for data usage. I replied and they've sent me a lovely graph showing that I did indeed go over the 20 requests per second. I have B.A. set to throttle requests to 20 requests per second, so how is it possible for me to incur charges? Is the throttling done per market as I sometimes have more than one market open at a time?

Thank you.
Michael.

No, if you have 2 markets open in the same BA the throttling works.

A problem could be if you have 2 BA open because they don't know each other requests. The help section says that you should set the throttling to 10 in both BAs so that they only can use 20 together.

Strange then as I have never opened more than one instance of B.A.

Hi,

It is impossible for BA to exceed the 20 requests per second with the throttling ticked and using 1 instance of BA.

Were you using some other software at the same time?

Regards,
Mark

Hi Mark,

I can't see any reason for running B.A. more than once (anyone wish to tell me why you would?).

The graph shows that it was happening all night, I did leave a number of markets open through the night as I was testing something and it would appear I left the speed at 0.1 which is my default (if leaving mkts open I usually raise this) but the throttling is as always set to 20.

The only thing I can think of is I might have kept the Betfair webpage open as I usually find the markets I want through the site as its easier.

I can send you the graph if you wish.

Thank you for the help.
Michael.

If BA was using the full 20 requests per second and you were also viewing markets via Betfair's website then it is possible to incur charges as all requests are counted by Betfair. Requests via the website are also twice as expensive at 0.2p per request that exceeded 20 in a second. We are confident the throttling is working. Maybe Betfair can give you a breakdown of which requests were Betting Assistant and which were the website.

BA would only be running more than once if you deliberately opened it more than once so you would have been aware of that.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
