Betfair account locked for incorrect password?

Postby London_Calling » Tue Apr 06, 2010 8:24 am

As there's no thread I guess I'm the only one with this problem.

The process is this: I open BA, type in my password as usual, the user name is already there, click 'ok', and link up with a spreadsheet.

Then, on 3 of the last 4 days, at some point in the afternoon I get a message that the account has been locked for security reasons because someone has tried to enter a password six times - while I've just been plodding away with BA and the spreadshet.

I can't imagine it has anything to do with my coding and the Befair phone guy asked if I was using the API and to maybe speak with the vendors . . .

Just a bit stuck for an answer really, hence posting. Any ideas as to why it's locking me out?

I don't know who is trying to access your account but I can assure you it isn't anything to do with Betting Assistant and we do not share our database with anyone.

After your account gets locked you can got to "My Account" on Betfair's website and click on "My security". It will show you the last 10 ip addresses that attempted to access your account. You should be able to see the IP address of the offender with "Logon failed" next to it. If this is not your IP address then report this to Betfair.

Thanks for the info about IP's. All the attempts resolve to my fixed IP. This is prety interesting:

2010-Apr-06 13:54 BST 86.18.**.** (United Kingdom) Logon Successful
2010-Apr-06 13:39 BST 86.18.**.** (United Kingdom) Logon Failed
2010-Apr-06 13:39 BST 86.18.**.** (United Kingdom) Logon Successful
2010-Apr-06 23:30 BST 86.18.**.** (United Kingdom) Logon Successful

1. It seems to have me logging in 12 hours from now
2. I know I only logged into BA once today (at 13:39), but that log has me logging in twice at exactly the same time. I absolutely didn't
3. I did not log in again at 13:54

Any suggestions before I speak to them . . .

Are the IP addresses all the IP address of your PC?

Yes.

Spoke to Betfair and they'll get back to me later today. I'm no Internet guru but I thought the best suggestion so far is a corrupt cookie . . .

The 12 hours hence login might also suggest some weird stuff to do with the English-Asian option (that's on the Betfair Home Page, the blue navigation bar, the menu on that blue bar next to the globe icon). But they had me play around with that to no avail.

Using Firefox / Windows XP.

I'll post Betfair's answer when they email me, apparanetly later today.

I think you always get a double login in the history when using BA.

I have no technical expertise but I read the double login as representing once for BA and once for the browser login to the Betfair home page . . . . Effectively, I do log in twice.

I can confirm that Betting Assistant logs in via the API and through the website when you first login so it will show a double login. It logs in via the website so it can fetch data not available through the API, eg. the Betfair chart displayed when you click on the selection name on the grid.

Just to clear this up; the problem persisted for several days - Betfair closed the account every day for over a week for repeated 'login unsuccessful' when all I'd done is log in once at lunchtime and nothing more. In looking at the logs you could see it had indeed happened dozens of times from my own fixed IP address, sometimes for even unsuccessful attempts 12 hours before that time actually came i.e. I'd made unsuccessful attempts to log in in the future!

The solution was to remove every part of the Firebox browser and to switch, I'm using Chrome now and it's a bit like Firefox used to be. That good.

Everything has been perfect since :D

So a rogue browser, who knew . . .

Thank you Gary and Ian for your help.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
