Excel advice

Postby wine » Sat Jul 17, 2010 9:29 am

Hi

Could someone help me with a simple spreadsheet please?

I have looked at some of the other threads, and am still confused by it.

UK horse racing win markets.
I want to back horses.
50p stake
Trade out 2 ticks
No stop loss
Odds between 10 and 30
Keep all bets in play.

Thanks you in advance for any help.

Best regards

Hi,

I know how hard it can be starting out.

You need to create a trigger in Column Q5 of your excel sheet such as the one shown here and have the sheet linked to BA

=IF(AND($E$2="Not In Play",$F$2="",$R5>=10,$R5<=30),"BACK-TL2-IP","")

This will place a back bet and then try to lay at 2 ticks lower.

Have sent you a sheet by pm.

Cheers,

Great. Just tried it and it's working well.

I'm assuming it will only place bets when I click on the market.

How do I get it to automatically monitor all markets, and place bets say 5 minutes before the off?

And would you mind explaining the =IF(AND($E$2="Not In Play",$F$2="",$R5>=10,$R5<=30),"BACK-TL2-IP","").

What does the $ do?

Thanks once again for the speed and excellence of the help

Best regards

Just to add that you should be careful with in play tick offsets because odds sometimes moves rapidly & your lay bet in that case will remain unmatched

OK. Thanks for the advice.

Is it possible to monitor the markets automatically, and only start betting 5 minutes before the off? I also don't want it to bet in play.

Best regards

Sorry I misread your requirements - I thought you wanted to bet in play.

Change that part of trigger that reads "BACK-TL2-IP" to "BACK-TL2-IPC"

Now Back bets will only be placed before the off, and if matched the Lay bet will be placed before or during the race.

Have a look at these pictures:

As to the $ it is not needed I just prefer working with absolute rather than relative references.

I am off out now for the rest of the day.

Suggest you start of with 10p stakes to make sure everything is working as you intended.

Be lucky :D

place this formula in cell aa1
=IF(LEFT(D2)<>"-",(HOUR(D2)*3600)+(MINUTE(D2)*60)+SECOND(D2),-((HOUR(SUBSTITUTE(D2,"-",""))*3600)+(MINUTE(SUBSTITUTE(D2,"-",""))*60)+SECOND(SUBSTITUTE(D2,"-",""))))

This will turn the countdown clock at d2 cell to seconds (thanks to Gary)

in q5 cell place this
=if(f5<>"",if(and(f5>=10,f5<=30,$aa$1<=300), "BACK-TL2-IPC","wait"),"wait")
"drag" down the formula t say q55

in r5 column place the formula =f5 & drag down to r55
in stake column s5 to s55 place your stake 0.5

haven't test it so be careful :)

the $ sign is about cell reference
google something $ excel & you see

i strongly recommend to start learning excel (formulas at least) in order to be able to test & master BA....

Thanks Mak

Looks like it's working well with what Ray suggested about loading the markets automatically (again something I wasn't aware of!!)

Could you recommend any reading to master excel?

Also, is it possible to have 2 triggers running like the one which Ray made for me, but with slightly different parameters, eg different price spread, different no. of ticks etc?

Best regards

Regarding excel formulas you can start here
http://www.cpearson.com/excel/excelf.htm (he also sells some fine books for excel highly recommended by me at-least )

and here
http://www.mrexcel.com/articles.shtml (here you can find a lot of examples also)

you can google something excel formulas (there is plenty of information online)

Regarding 2 triggers the easiest way for the time being is to open a second tab of the market & link it on a second workbook...

Out of interest I ran the Excel sheet I sent you.

I did every race on on Saturday including Ireland for 10p stakes and lost about £3.

On Sunday I changed the stake to 50p and backed between odds of 10 and 20 and lost £2.

Seems to me you can expect about 10% of your lays not to be matched thus putting you in a losing position - so not sure if it is a good betting strategy.

Another point to be aware of is that by staking less than £2 I incurred several thousand cancelled bets over the weekend - something that Betfair may disapprove of.

Excellent advice from mak :)

Cheers,

Hi Ray

Thanks for all the help. I really just wanted an idea how to start with excel, I realise it's not a great strategy!!

Hi Mak

I tried to link the second excel page with a new page on Gruss, but it didn't seem to read the second excel page. No bets were placed.

Is there anything else I can try?

Bets regards

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
