Excel not responding!!!

Postby danjuma » Sat Sep 11, 2010 8:42 am

Just to say, this is not a BA problem (I think, as it happens even when not linked to BA). Just posting to see if anybody ever had same problem or have any suggestion/advice.

Of recent (since a week now or so), my excel keeps stopping to respond quite often (hour glass spinning endlessly), and even when I try to end the program or kill the process via the task manager, it fails to stop and close. The only way I have been able to stop it is to restart the computer, and even sometimes after this, when I open same file, it sometimes continues to non-respond, until I shut the computer down completely and power it back on. I have MS Office 2007, and I have reloaded the disk and selected the repair option, just in case my program has been corrupted, but still no joy. The only thing I know I have done to my computer of recent is upgrade my Kaspersky Internet Security from version 10 to version 11, but don't think why this should be the cause. Any ideas or suggestions please?

Many thanks

Is this just happening with one workbook in particular? If so is there a macro that runs on opening the workbook and could this macro contain a loop that could potentially run infinitely?

No Gary, don't think it's to do with a macro. It's happening with sheets that do not have macros that run automatically. The only other thing I can add, is that, if I am not mistaken, it seems to have started after I ran a sheet with a looping macro a while ago, which ran endlessly until I had to shut down either excel or the computer (can't remember which one now). However, I corrected the sheet (removed the bad loop). What seems to happen is that the excel will work fine when I first open it (whether linked to BA or not), and all of sudden will just stop responding and hang (and the most frustrating bit is the fact that the only way to stop it is to restart the computer).

More or less since I started using BA about a year ago my PC has been prone to completely freezing if BA is running when I close down Internet Explorer, or occasionally MS Outlook. The only way to get back up and running is to switch off the PC and restart.

I, too, use Kaspersky Internet Security, and I've sometimes wondered if this is the culprit — I'm beginning to suspect that it could be.

This isn't really a big problem, as when BA is running (during all UK racing) I just leave my PC alone.

Does anyone else use Kaspersky and experience similar problems, or is this just a coincidence?

A couple of years back I had a similar type problem.

I found that I was unwittingly running my excel/vba sheets with faults that resulted in the Application.enablevents= true not being actioned before exiting the vba routine. This meant the sheet lost communication with BA and I would have to reload to get thind working.

Someone on the forum provided a macro which set Application.enablevents= true when I hit CTRL/E and this provided a simple way out .

Unfortunately I have lost the macro - I could do with it if anybody could show me how to get it into my excel - I think other users would find it useful - possibly including the current post of this thread.

@Craig:

Once I bought a new computer and Kapersky was already installed. I had no
BA at that time but a lot of problems which disappeared after uninstalling
Kapersky.

@BlueBoy:

Yes, sometimes after a wanted or unwanted halt of macros they refuse to
start again. Then I execute the following simple macro:

Sub restart()
Application.EnableEvents = True
End Sub

A few weeks ago I switched from Kaspersky Internet Security to the security suite from Bullguard. Since the switch, I haven't had any more issues when running BA.

If anyone experiences freezing/crashing problems with BA, consider trying out an alternative security suite — most give a free trial period (60 days with Bullguard).

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
