Putting a bet on just as race is finishing

Hi there, can you please tell me if there is any way of monitoring the progress of a race. I would like to be able to put bets on just as the race is finishing. Say within the last half mile or so. Is there any way of knowing when a race only has about half a mile to go?

1. Watching the race
2. Estimating the duration of the race (preoff of course) and betting after the race has reached the 80% (?) of this estimation
