Using Triggered betting as a stop loss mechanism

Postby kapilay » Wed May 10, 2006 4:08 pm

Hi guys,

I am trying to use triggered betting as a stop loss device, without any success, and could use some help/advice.

Scenario:
1) Manually place a lay bet, say £10 @ 3.5.
2) Betfair will issue a Bet_reference no: 123456
3) Intention is to get out by placing a back bet if odds fall to, say 2.5 with a stake of £15.
4) No. 3 will most likely happen "In Running".
5) Enter the IF statement in the Excel sheet with the correct conditions.
6) Odds fall to 2.5, column N says BACK, cols O and P have the odds and stake required (set to 1.01 and £15).
7) Instead of placing the back bet, Excel displays the Lay bet ref (from no. 1 above, 123456) and does nothing.

Does this mean that this functionality can only be used to place a bet and not to back out of one as I am trying to do? I have done all the things required (logged in, ticked the tiggered bet box etc).

Having followed the forumn for a couple of months and seen the knowledge and helpfulness that exists in it, I am hopeful that someone will have the answer.

Many thanks.

I think the problem here is the bet ref.

While the bet ref remains, another bet cannot be made on your selection so you need to remove the bet ref, then make your BACK bet. I do this via a macro, but i think there is a CLEAR command or something similar that will remove the reference.

You could try it manually first to see if this is what you require.

Thanks for the response George.

I understand that it is the bet ref that is causing the problem. I have cleared everything from cols Q to U but the problem is that when the BACK bet is triggered, the software puts the bet ref for the LAY bet that was placed some time ago in column Q. Now, because there is a ref in Q, it sits there and does nothing.

I even cleared col Q after the ref no. appeared in it but it just came back.

So the question is: Am I doing something wrong or is the trigger feature designed to only have one bet on a horse, even if the first bet was placed directly on the BF website? If that is the case, it means that this feature cannot be used to impose a Stop Loss on a trade.

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

When the bet ref came back are you sure it was the same number.

If col.N still says BACK or LAY when you clear the bet ref it will place another bet for you.

I might have the wrong end of the stick but it sounds like that might be what's happening.

Mitch,

Yes it was the same number. However, I no longer have the problem - created a new workbook and enetered all the macros, VB routines and formulas all over again, and it works.

I printed out both the new and the old workbooks and there is no visible difference between the two. They are absolutely identical. But one works properly and the other does not. Conclusion? Only a guess, but some extraneous and invisible stuff has crept into my workbook and is making it behave in this strange way.

Anyway, thanks to all for taking the time to respond.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
