Excel question

Postby eclipse » Fri Aug 10, 2012 2:48 pm

Hi, wondered if anyone knows the best way to run multiple instances of BA. I have 2 instances of BA running (different users) with 4 tabs on each linked to 4 different worksheets on Excel. Is it better to run each one linked to their own Excel file with 4 sheets or better to link them both to one Excel file with 8 sheets? Would have thought having just one Excel file open would be better but if anyone knows, please let me know, thank you.

It depends on how many cores/threads your CPU has, what you're attempting in Excel and also the refresh rate in BA. Eg if you run simple VBA and it's quick then you could easily run 50 sheets from one instance of Excel with a quick refresh rate. If the VBA needs more resources or is slower then it may be better to spread the sheets across several Workbooks which will allow the CPU to run each on a separate thread. VBA is single threaded so usually code within 1 workbook will be competing for resource on a single thread.

There's also a performance boost in VBA by having Excel as the active window is usually given priority by Windows. It can be lessened to a degree by setting performance to background services but having Excel in focus with performance set to programs is faster.

Thanks for the insight os, I have just installed an 8 core processor so should have plenty of processing available.

I had such a problem some time ago. It's difficult today to remember how it has been solved. But in any case I found suggestions given here as very interesting. Thanks.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
