Suspended hang's

Postby pugs » Thu Aug 16, 2007 2:42 am

Hello Gary Mark and all

Could anybody shed some light on what could be causing the "suspended" to hang on my pc. This happens on both the BA Beta and native interface simultaneously, so i know its not because either the API or web interface has unsuspended before the other.

It usually hang's for 2 to 3 one second refreshes, with bets updating beneath it.
It happens on both my pc's, which are regularly cleaned, and i switch virus protection off whilst only at Betfair, plus Betfair in "trusted sites" so minimal safeguards.
Plus as i said, it happens with the BA beta as well.

My internet gateway (ubr) has recently been upgraded, and has improved, but latency is not quite as it should be. Could this possibly cause the suspend to hang but prices refresh normally?

Any help much appreciated.

The suspended flag is retrieved in the same request as the prices so if you see this then it's because the API is sending prices with the suspended flag set. I've no idea why this happens, but it's nothing to do with your PC, the progam is just correctly displaying what it is receiving. Only Betfair can answer why they are sending the info in the first place.

Cheers Gary, thats very interesting

Am i right in thinking then, that it is the programme or web page that gives you the error msg saying "market is currently suspended" rather than a response from the Betfair server.

The error message is returned by Betfair's server.

Sorry Gary, i do very much appreciate your response.

I obviously don't doubt for one minute you saying "The error message is returned by Betfair's server" but i do find it hard to get my head round. It would mean that either some people have the ability to bet through the "suspended", which i doubt, or as you suggest, Betfair unsuspend but continue to send the "suspended" flag for a second or two after they have unsuspended, which seems strange because some people are able to bet.

Plus i assumed it was the web page that gave the error msg because the response seemed instant, and if i attempt to set bets up to go in-running using the Betfair scripts while the market is suspended, i get the error msg without submitting anything, so that error msg must come from a different source. Sorry i'm rambling

Anyway cheers Gary.

A substantial spread betting firm does what you describe and their profits from in running are substantial. The profit from Betfair is shown in their accounts.

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
