I didnt think when I asked you layit,i'd get this grief from other people.............if the source was open it would be easy to see if you or anybody had any untoward code in it.as would any future updates/installs...........we both know its unusual to give your finances over to a free download.

Last year i was actually going to offer a free open source download to anybody who wanted it,but was prevailed upon not to do this, which saved me as i couldnt code it and would have had to pay someone else...

Basically if its free and available for downloading to anybody i cant see why its not open source, your giving it away,so who cares if people can see the code....who cares if they pass it on,nobody is going to pay someone else if yours is free.

like I said layit,i'm not accusing you,and if you would rather i didnt ask i'm happy to leave this thread.

As has been mentioned before, not just to yourself but others as well, if you dont trust it dont download it and if you have got it uninstall it, quite simple really.
It seems to me there are a few people out there with some knowledge that they wouldnt share without payment and are pretty peed off that someone is giving something for free that REALLY WORKS!!!!!!

I use Open Office - it's fantastic to get something of that quality for free and the fact it's open source helped make it what it is - no question. However, it's been open source from day one unlike Betfair Trader.

Gary's done the work if he wants to keep it his own i would fully understand - it's a great program and just gets better and better. If one day he decides to go open source and see what happens so be it.

The key words there being HE DECIDES

As to the security issues - as has been said over and over again - if u don't trust don't use it.

Hmmmm.....I can see Layits perspective and support him whatever his decision is - As has been said many times - what he has done is phenomenal - and all of us who use it have a huge debt to him....

I'm starting to wonder though - could the benefit of making this open source not lead to even more developments/improvements to the software at a faster rate, without asking any more of lay it? (Seriously, we couldn't ask and more of him - he's done more than enough) - there have recently been requests for the book percentages and to back/lay inside the last price - I know I would find both of these additions very useful. I'm sure that there are lots and lots of additions which would be useful, that at the moment we can only dream of!! If it were open source, could this not lead to the development of this even faster?

I am a web site developer (php and asp) and have no experience of VB or interfacing with Betfair - if this were open source however, I would be very interested in working through it, understanding it, learning it and, if I could, developing it. Just a thought........

Oh dear.

When you said you would never make it open source???????????

If you do all the muppets under the sun will fudgk it up and hammer BF making it only a matter of a short time before BF totally obfuscate the site.

You also said you would never charge for the SW.

Never say never eh

Sports betting software from Gruss Software

The strength of Gruss Software is that it’s been designed by one of you, a frustrated sports punter, and then developed by listening to dozens of like-minded enthusiasts.

Gruss is owned and run by brothers Gary and Mark Russell. Gary discovered Betfair in 2004 and soon realised that using bespoke software to place bets was much more efficient than merely placing them through the website.

Gary built his own software and then enhanced its features after trialling it through other Betfair users and reacting to their improvement ideas, something that still happens today.

He started making a small monthly charge so he could work on it full-time and then recruited Mark to help develop the products and Gruss Software was born.

We think it’s the best of its kind and so do a lot of our customers. But you can never stand still in this game and we’ll continue to improve the software if any more great ideas emerge.
