Transfer Window Summary - Summer 2015

Once again it has come to the end of the transfer window, where long sought after deals have come to fruition, last minute contracts have been signed, and everyone stops panicking. This year it has been as frantic as ever, with Premier League football clubs breaking the summer transfer window spending record, paying out a total of £870m. Below you will find a full round up of the biggest news to come out of this Premier League transfer period, including the deals that were as good as done, but never materialised.

Biggest News

Manchester United have undoubtedly had the most turbulent transfer period, with the entrance of Old Trafford resembling a revolving door considering the amount of players coming and going. They have been linked with every big name from Ramos to Neymar, the latter rumoured to be considering a move to Manchester for £240m. The biggest news however, was the collapse of David De Gea’s Real Madrid move. Worth £29m, along with keeper Keylor Navas included, the deal was reported to be abandoned after Real hadn’t provided the necessary paperwork in time. This leaves De Gea in a tenuous position in Manchester, with it already being public knowledge of his wish to move with his Spanish girlfriend. The next best thing would be the transfer to be concluded in January.

The Red Devils have also broken records for signing the most expensive teenager of all time, in capturing Anthony Martial for £36m from Monaco. Only time will tell if this will be a worthwhile acquisition. The team have also waved goodbye to van Persie, Nani, Di Maria, Hernandez, Januzaj, Cleverley, Evans and Lindegaard.

Manchester City came close to breaking a record for the most expensive signing, by getting Kevin De Bruyne to transfer from Wolfsburg for £55m. The price tag wasn’t large enough to match Di Maria’s £59.7m but combined with Raheem Sterling’s controversial £49m transfer from Liverpool, City have not been shy with their money this year, spending approximately £160m in total. Along with Nicolas Otamendi and Fabian Delph, the new additions should enhance a side vying for Premier League and Champions League victory.

Chelsea had a much more sensible deadline day, compared to others splashing out, in that they signed Papy Djilobodji and Michael Hector to strengthen their defence, after failing to nab John Stones from Everton. Despite the failure to meet the price for Juventus’ Paul Pogba, the blues still managed to get Pedro from Barcelona, Abdul Baba Rahman from Augsburg and Kenedy from Fluminese.

In Merseyside, Liverpool managed to sell Fabio Borini to Sunderland and Mario Balotelli to Milan, but seemed content with their initial haul of Benteke, Nathaniel Clyne, Milner and Danny Ings rather than splash out on deadline day. In the blue half of the region, Everton successfully signed previous loan candidate Aaron Lennon and Argentine defender Ramiro Funes Mori for £9.5m and managed to retain defender John Stones, from the tempting offers of Chelsea.

Best team of Transfer Deadline Day

West Ham had an excellent transfer period by tempting Michail Antonio and Nikica Jelavic to sign permanent deals, as well as loan out Alex Song and Victor Moses. Out of all the disgruntled fans of other clubs who may have disappointed, Hammers fans should be elated with a serious strengthening of their side, which will help them clamber up the league this year.

Worst Team of the Transfer Deadline Day

Despite slight murmurings of Arsenal trying to capture Edison Cavani, nothing materialised, leaving the Gunners with the single signing of goalkeeper Petr Cech from Chelsea to be contented with. Compared to previous deadline day swoops such as Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck, fans may be disappointed with the lack of new players. Despite the fact the Gunners became the only team in top 5 European leagues not to sign an outfield player, this doesn’t mean that their current team isn’t capable of challenging for silverware this year.
